POMONA — Police recovered more than 500 marijuana plants after serving a search warrant at a business in Pomona, authorities said Thursday.
Officers received calls about 11 p.m. Wednesday of downed wires and a transformer box on fire in the alley located on the 500 block of West Holt Avenue, and when they arrived on scene, they discovered sparking wires hanging from a utility pole, according to Sgt. J. Martinez of the Pomona Police Department.
Los Angeles County firefighters arrived and contacted Southern California Edison to address the downed wires situation, he said.
A utility worker assessed the problem and informed police the downed, sparking wires were the result of a power overload coming from a business located at 560 W. Holt Ave., and such power overloads at businesses and homes are often consistent with marijuana grows, Martinez said.
Officers attempted to make contact with the business and observed a back sliding door left open and entered the building to determine if anyone inside or the business was a victim of a crime, Martinez said. During a sweep of the building, a sophisticated marijuana grow was located, and officers obtained a search warrant and discovered more than 500 marijuana plants weighing over 120 pounds.
No suspects were located, and Edison disconnected power to the business, he said.
