OAKLAND — California’s first-ever cannabis chief, Lori Ajax, will retire Dec. 2 from the Bureau of Cannabis Control, a spokesperson for the agency confirmed Friday to POLITICO.
Background: Ajax has guided California’s lead marijuana agency since February 2016, when she was appointed its first chief by Gov. Jerry Brown. In this role, she has overseen the state’s bumpy transition from a loosely affiliated network of medical cannabis shops and collectives to a highly regulated, legal market.
Ajax came to the bureau shortly after its creation through the Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act, a measure passed by the Legislature in 2015 to create a regulatory framework for licensing and enforcement of medical businesses, including retail, delivery and testing. After voters legalized recreational marijuana in November 2016 through Proposition 64, BCC was then tasked with developing new regulations and issuing licenses for the adult-use market by 2018.
