WEED, Calif. — Netflix is recognizing the funniest town names across America as part of its promotion for its comedy and social channel, “Netflix is a joke,” and Weed, Calif. is one of the towns on that list.
General Manager of Hi-Lo Cafe in Weed, Derek Grafton, said he got a phone call from Netflix two weeks ago saying it wanted to pay for all meals ordered between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. on August 12.
“Like Netflix? Why is Netflix calling Weed? You know? What are they doing? Is this a scam? But no, sure enough, it was the real deal and it’s about time this town gets a little bit of recognition,” Grafton said.
Grafton said the 65-year-old family business serves about 400 meals on a busy summer day, but the restaurant served this many in just a few hours of opening.
“We shut our phone ordering system down within 15 minutes of the promotion. We received over 350 phone calls in our office,” Grafton said.
Around 12 p.m., Grafton had to cut off the line for people waiting outside because there were so many orders they would not get to before 2 p.m.
